Background Information: Rail automation in mass transit systems - How does automatic train control work?

چکیده
A trackside computer tracks all trains in the assigned section of line and calculates an appropriate movement authority for each train. As a result, trains are routed continuously and can run at shorter headways than when driven manually on sight. In fully automated mode, metro trains are driven by the Automatic Train Control (ATC) in combination with control and protection of the line by interlockings. To this end, the trackside computers are constantly exchanging data with the computers of the higher-level system in the control center and the computers in the train by radio. On board the train, the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system replaces the metro driver and controls the train's speed. The ATO computer is monitored and, if necessary, corrected by the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.

The IEEE 1473-L Communications Protocol: Experience In Rail Transit
Even before the IEEE’s Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee (RTVISC) approved IEEE 1473, railcar manufacturers from Breda in Italy to Kinki-Sharyo in Japan to Bombardier in Canada had been designing the underlying LonWorks® protocol into their rail vehicles. But after its formal adoption in 1999, IEEE 1473-L based networks have begun to proliferate at transit properties in North A...
متن کاملHuman-Centred Design of an Automatic Train Regulation System
Modern urban light rail systems must deliver a frequent and regular train timetable in order to provide a good service to passengers. This paper describes how a human-centred design approach was taken to the provision of automated functionality that aims to augment human operators in one particular operational practice in the rail domain. Automatic Train Regulation (ATR) is a software tool that...
متن کاملDemand-oriented timetable design for urban rail transit under stochastic demand
In the context of public transportation system, improving the service quality and robustness through minimizing the average passengers waiting time is a real challenge. This study provides robust stochastic programming models for train timetabling problem in urban rail transit systems. The objective is minimization of the weighted summation of the expected cost of passenger waiting time, its va...
متن کاملA cognitive control approach to interference mitigation in communications-based train control (CBTC) co-existing with passenger information systems (PISs)
As a key component of urban rail transit systems, communications-based train control (CBTC) is an automated train control system using train-ground communications to ensure efficient operation of rail vehicles. In addition to CBTC systems, passenger information systems (PISs) are adopted in urban rail transit systems to improve quality of service (QoS) offered to customers. The interference bet...
متن کاملStudy on Urban Rail Rapid Transit Accidents Prevention and Hazards Identification
In comparison with the other transportation modes, rail rapid transit already enjoys a higher degree of safety as it is designed with the exclusive right of way and the automatic train control and monitoring systems. Nevertheless, rail rapid transit systems are not free from serious accidents, which often led to human injuries and facility damages. The planning of accident prevention and emerge...
